


The morphology of the city, its spatial practices, and its urbanism are regarded as unique, so much so that a sociologist once said that it is perhaps “India’s only city”. Mumbai’s high-rises and malls, its slums and shanties, its pavement dwellers and SoBo2 elites and its “mysterious middle classes”3 have been celebrated and derided in movies, in literature and the media, and in everyday conversations. He popular imagination of Mumbai/Bombay/Bambai1 is as much about its built environment as about its people, what they do, their collective and individual habits, and their aspirations.
